Professor Akolekar is the Clinical Lead at the Medway Fetal and Obstetric Medicine Centre (MFMC) at Medway NHS Foundation Trust. This tertiary-level specialist unit provides expert care for high-risk pregnancies across Kent and Medway and is recognised for its excellence in the diagnosis and management of complex fetal and maternal conditions.

In addition to his clinical work, Professor Akolekar is a highly regarded academic and researcher, affiliated with Canterbury Christ Church University. He plays a key role in postgraduate medical education and has contributed to the development of advanced academic training programmes for doctors.

As Clinical Lead for Research and Innovation at Medway NHS Foundation Trust, he is actively involved in national and international research focused on improving outcomes in pregnancy. His work—supported by organisations such as the Fetal Medicine Foundation—focuses on the prediction and prevention of complications including fetal growth restriction, pre-eclampsia, and stillbirth.
